Super Chunky Wrist Warmers: Free Knitting Pattern

a pair of super chunky wrist warmer fingerless mittens worn on a pair of hands showing the mitts in the knitting pattern

It might be June, but we have seen a lot of rain here in the UK. It has even been cold enough to dig out some chunky yarn and have a jolly good knitting session.

I designed these fun, super chunky wrist warmers as part of a new knitting pattern collection called The Chunky Edit: 20 Modern Knitting Patterns for Hats, Scarves and Accessories.

The mitts are really fast and fun to knit. Just knit flat and seam up the ends, leaving a space for the thumbs.

These fingerless mittens are to fit an average adult hand.

You can use any super chunky yarn to knit up these wrist warmers. I chose a self striping yarn called Stylecraft Merry G Ground XL. This is a really soft super chunky yarn and is one of my favourite big, squishy yarns to knit quick accessories with. You can check out and purchase this yarn here at The Knitting Network or here at LoveCrafts.

Help with Super Chunky Knitting

Included in my new chunky knitting pattern book is lots of help with chunky knitting. For example, metric to USA knitting needles, and which ply to choose if you live in countries such as Australia.

Here is some of that information to help you select your yarn and knitting needles for using with this pattern.

Super Chunky (UK) is also known as Super Bulky (US)

Super chunky yarns are worked on 10 mm needles (US 15).
International equivalents include:

  • US: Super Bulky (Weight Category 6)
  • Australia/NZ: Typically 16ply
  • Example: Malabrigo Rasta is a classic super bulky yarn for 10 mm needles

Super chunky yarns are very thick and produce warm, substantial knitwear with dramatic texture and very fast knitting.

Here is a list of metric to USA knitting needle sizes used in chunky knitting:

  • 6mm – US 10
  • 6.5mm – US 10.5
  • 8mm – US 11
  • 10mm – US 15
  • 12mm – US 17
  • 15mm – US 19

Ok, here is your free pattern for a pair of super chunky wrist warmers that I decided to name Pulse Mitts. This represents the changing the colours and textures, and the vibrancy of the mittens.
