Hello and welcome! Today’s post is the free knitting pattern for a simple chunky newborn baby bonnet.
The bonnet was created basically to use up some new chunky yarn. Baby bonnets are so fast to knit, especially in newborn size, and they are a great knitting project to do when wanting to see how yarn looks when knitted up.
This particular yarn is chunky in thickness and works up on 6mm needles. It is called Arlequin and is made by a company called Bergere de France.
This chunky yarn may not be available where you are. I bought it here at Lovecrafts. You can use any chunky yarn to make this bonnet – just look for one that calls for 6mm needles and you are good to go.

Cast on 35 stitches. If you knit tightly or would like a larger bonnet, cast on 40 stitches. If you cast on 40, ignore the below ribbing instructions and simply (k1, p1) for each ribbing row.
Work 3 rows of 1 x 1 rib as follows:
- (K1,p1) to last stitch, k1
- (P1, k1) to last stitch, p1
- (K1,p1) to last stitch, k1
Starting with k row, work stocking stitch (k 1 row, p 1 row) until work measures 11cm from cast on edge.
Work the following decrease rows:
- *K3,k2tog* to end of row
- P
- *K2,k2tog* to end of row
- P
- *K1, k2tog* to end of row
Cut yarn, leaving a long enough tail to sew up back seam, thread tail through remaining stitches and pull to draw together. Sew up back seam to where the decrease rows started.
Add ties or tassels to the front edges of the bonnet. The bonnet featured here has braided ties. You can see how I make these in this article.

And that’s it! A really quick and simple chunky newborn baby bonnet.
