This bonnet is a super fast knitting project. It is knit with chunky yarn on 6mm/US size 10 knitting needles and can be made in under one hour.
This baby bonnet would make a brilliant gift for a newborn and is something a little different.
The bonnet is gender neutral in its styling too – would be a wonderful little garment to keep any sweet new baby warm and cosy.

Using chunky yarn for baby knitting
There is more and more demand for chunky yarn hat is suitable for babies. It knits up quickly and is, most importantly, cosy and warm for babies to wear.
Yarn manufacturers have responded to this need and there is a whole bunch of chunky baby yarns on the market now.
The yarn used for this particular bonnet is Hayfield Baby Chunky. This is available in a beautiful self patterning version too you can have a look at it here.
You don’t have to use a yarn just for babies of course – however check that your yarn is soft and easy to care for. Pure wool, for example, may be itchy and need hand washing. A superwash chunky merino would be awesome though and such a yarn would show up the texture of this bonnet to perfection.

Attach ties to the bonnet, for example braids, ribbons or twisted cord.
Below is a photo of how I make bonnet ties. I cut 6 stands of yarn, 1 metre each, and thread them straight through the fabric of the bonnet at the front edges. Then separate into 3 lots of 2 strands, and braid. Knot when done and trim to finish. Make two matching ties at the length of your choice.
