Custom Knits: Meet Jane from Liberty’s Knits

Knitting has a wonderful way of weaving nostalgia into something tangible. Whether it’s a childhood jumper you wish you still had or a pattern from decades past that sparks happy memories, there’s something magical about recreating the past with yarn.

That’s exactly what Jane of Liberty‘s Knits specialises in, bringing vintage and nostalgic designs back to life, stitch by stitch.

As a knitter myself, I love creating my own pieces, but I struggle with double knitting wool on a project bigger than hats or gloves. For projects such as sweaters I much prefer working with thicker yarn because finer wool hurts my hands.

When I came across Jane’s work and realised she would bring my dream jumper, a 1980s design featuring Zippy and George from Rainbow, to life, I couldn’t resist putting in an order.

An Introduction to Jane from Liberty’s Knits

Jane hails from the midlands in England but now lives in Lancashire.  She started to knit in her teens, and began to knit for other people in her twenties.

After moving to Lancashire in 2014, Jane needed something to occupy her time. Her daughter had the idea of advertising on the internet to see if anyone was interested in ordering custom knits.

Liberty’s Knits slowly took off and Jane now has a portfolio of loyal, regular customers. She is always very happy to meet new people to knit for too.

Jane tells me she enjoys knitting anything and to any size.  However, picture knits and cable arans are her favourite knitting projects.  In particular, she loves watching the pictures appearing when working with Intarsia knitting patterns.

You can see below a wonderful gallery with some of Jane’s favourite knits.

I met this fabulous fellow knitter in a Facebook knitting group.  She had just finished the Sweep jumper that you can see above and we got chatting after I made a comment about its magnificence.

I decided to take the plunge and order a jumper with my favourite ever kids British tv programme characters, George and Zippy.

Here I am wearing the finished jumper!

If you would to learn more about Jane or are considering making an order, you can find her here on Facebook (click).

If you are a knitter yourself and fancy doing some vintage picture knitting, I recommend this Etsy shop which has lots of fun vintage picture Intarsia knitting patterns.

Who would be on your favourite nostalgic knit jumper? Let everyone know in the comments below!
