I recently bought a ball of delicious aran or worsted thickness yarn called Mocktail from Hobby Yarn. Its self striping and has sparkle in it, and I absolutely couldn’t wait to start using it.
Use it I did and had a little bit left over.
I decided to use this left over yarn to create a design for a quick and easy knitting project, ideal for knitting when watching tv.
The result? A pair of very quick and easy baby booties. Or perhaps baby slippers is a more accurate term.
This article contains the free knitting pattern to make these very cute baby booties. The pattern is ideal for beginners and is very easy. Please read on for the pattern and further details about yarn and materials needed to knit the baby booties.

Very Easy Baby Booties Free Knitting Pattern – What You Need
The baby shoes, or slippers, took only a very small amount of Hobbii Mocktail yarn. This is a wonderful yarn to knit with. It is very soft and comes in a huge variety of beautiful colours. I used colour number 3 which is the bottom photo below.

You can use any aran or worsted thickness yarn to make the baby shoes. In fact, this particular yarn probably isn’t the most ideal yarn for babies. It would probably be better for an adult project such as a headband or wrist warmers. However, I just love the stripes and would definitely give these booties to a new parent who loved bright and unusual colours (truth be told I am hanging on to them incase I become a grandma again).
As a UK knitter, here are some of my favourite aran yarns which are specifically designed for babies and would work well for a pair of these very easy baby booties:
You will also need a pair of 4.5mm (USA 7) knitting needles to make the baby bootees. If you knit tightly or would prefer a stretcher, roomier shoe, please use 5mm (USA 8) knitting needles. The booties are knit flat and seamed at the end. You will also need a pair of scissors and needle to sew up your work.
You may choose to add pompoms or a decoration like a bow to finish your knitted booties. You can see that I went down the pompom route. Obviously any such finishing touch must be secured very tightly. You can omit this step for a lovely looking classic and simple pair of baby slippers.
Size Details
These baby slippers are designed to fit a new baby. Garter stitch is very stretchy and so the shoes will last a while. Of course the fit will depend upon the size of the baby, too.

Knitting Pattern
Here is the free knitting pattern for a very easy pair of baby shoes.
Size/finished measurements:
New baby – 9 x 5cm
Materials needed:
Pair of 4.5mm (USA 7) knitting needles
Approx 30g of aran/worsted thickness yarn.
Tension:
Approx 3 stitches and 5 rows over 2cm in garter stitch
Abbreviations:
K – knit
K2tog – knit 2 together
Instructions:
Make 2 identical shoes.
You will use the casting on and off yarn tail ends to sew up the booties so keep them long.
- On 4.5mm needles, cast on 22 stitches.
- K every row until piece measures 9cm from the cast on edge.
- Shape the toe by knitting the following row:
- (K2tog) across row. 11 stitches remain on the needle.
- K 1 row.
- Cut the yarn, leaving a tail of around 25cm. Thread this yarn through remaining stitches, and pull to gather. Knot to secure. Sew up the front seam from the toes along the edge. Leave a space of 5cm for the feet to go in. Sew up the back seam using the cast on yarn.
Add a pompom or decoration like a bow to each shoe if wanted. This hides the top seam and adds extra cuteness.
I always use a whip stitch/flat seam to sew up baby items. I think this is more comfortable to wear and I like the finished look. Many knitters prefer to use mattress stitch though as it is less visible. Use whatever sewing method you prefer.
I hope you enjoyed this free baby shoes knitting pattern. As you can see, they are so very easy to knit and look really cute! Please do let me know in the comments if you knit a pair.

Would it be possible to knit these in double knit as I have some left over self patterning wool?
