Super Chunky Newborn Cupcake Hat Free Knitting Pattern

Last week I knitted and published the pattern for a cute chunky knit baby cupcake hat.

I was quite pleased with the easy to knit hat, however I felt it could be a little bit more cupcake like.

What I felt was missing actually was a bit more texture on the icing part of the cupcake, and indeed I felt the hat needed the addition of some sprinkles.

Today you will find the free knitting pattern for a very cute newborn baby cupcake hat knit in super chunky yarn.

The new and improved design is a really quick cupcake hat to knit.  It took me around 20 minutes plus sewing up.  The hat is knit with super chunky yarn and 9mm and 10mm knitting needles. A super quick baby hat knitting pattern!

This cupcake hat is therefore an excellent last minute gift for a new baby and an excellent baby shower offering.  I can see this hat design also being ideal for use as a prop in newborn photography.

Diagonal rib stitch adds some texture and a slight swirl to the icing part of the cupcake hat, and sprinkles were made by knitting a strand of pompom thread yarn.

Materials needed for the super chunky newborn cupcake hat

You will need small amounts of 2 colours of super chunky yarn to knit this sweet baby cupcake hat.

The cream shown in the photo here is actually an Aldi super chunky yarn.  It is very chunky indeed, chunkier than many other super chunky yarns that I have used.  Its nice and soft and I think works quite well in this cupcake hat design.

Please do fee free to use any super chunky yarn that works with 10-12mm knitting needles.  This is an ideal knitting pattern for using up spare and leftover super chunky yarn.

The little sprinkle feature was made by knitting a strand of pompom thread yarn along with the main yarn.  Please see the photo below.  This sort of yarn adds little touches of extra colour and texture to regular yarns. I bought this mini pompom yarn here at eBay UK. It comes in a variety of fun colours and I think it looks great used as sprinkles in a cupcake hat.

You will also need a pair each of 9mm and 10mm knitting needles, some scissors and a wide eye needle for sewing up.

  • With 9mm needles and the first colour (brown in my photos) cast on 24 stitches.
  • Work 6 rows of 2 x 2 rib.  This is worked as (k2, p2) across the row.
  • Change to 10mm needles and the second main colour.
  • K 2 rows
  • Now add in the pompom yarn, thus working with 1 strand of this along with the main yarn.
  • Work the following 8 rows of diagonal rib stitch:
  1. *K2, p2; *work from * to the end of the row
  2. *K2, p2; *work from * to the end of the row
  3. *K1, p2, k1; *work from * to the end of the row
  4. *P1, k2, p1; *work from * to the end of the row
  5. *P2, k2; *work from * to the end of the row
  6. *P2, k2; *work from * to the end of the row
  7. *P1, k2, p1; *work from * to the end of the row
  8. *K1, p2, k1; *work from * to the end of the row

Now shape the top of the hat as follows:

  1. K2tog to the end of the row (12)
  2. P2tog to the end of the row (6)

Cut yarn, leaving a long enough piece to sew up the back seam.  Thread through 6 remaining stitches, pull to gather and sew up back seam.  Weave in loose ends.

Add a pompom, either made with a small pompom maker (I use the one from this set) or a ready made pompom.

For the cupcake hats shown, I used pre-made Rico pompoms purchased here at Amazon UK.

In the photo below you can see the newborn cupcake cat using cream yarn for the base and a self striping yarn for the top of the hat.  This was an experiment and I think the hat turned out quite nicely.

The self striping yarn is called Stylecraft Merry Go Round XL and I have to say I love it.  It is definitely one of my favourite super chunky yarns and its really nice and soft.

I bought the Stylecraft Merry Go Round XL here at The Knitting Network.

I quite like how you can see the thread of the pompom yarn when it is paired with a colourful partner yarn. It kind of adds extra sprinkles or sugar strands. When knit alongside a white or cream yarn, the thread of the pompom yarn is just about invisible. Two different looks, which is a great feature actually.

I hope you enjoyed this newborn baby cupcake knitting pattern, please do let me know if you make one.
