Without further ado, here is the free baby cupcake hat knitting pattern.

Baby Cupcake Hat Knitting Pattern – fits approx 0-3m

Material Required:

  • One pair each of 5mm and 6mm knitting needles.
  • Small amounts of chunky yarn in 2 colours, or knit with 2 strands of dk yarn held together.
  • The hat shown was made with Stylecraft Special for Babies Chunky which I purchased from The Knitting Network.  This is a good, hard wearing chunky yarn, ideal for babies and children and which is also inexpensive. 
  • You will also need scissors and a wide eyed needle for sewing up the hat.
  • Small pompom maker.

Abbreviations:

  • K – knit
  • P – purl
  • K2tog – knit 2 together
  • P – purl 2 together

Instructions:

  • In colour one (for bottom of hat)  and on 5mm needles, cast on 40 stitches.
  • K 4 rows.
  • Change to 6mm needles.
  • Now starting with a k row, stocking stitch (k right side rows, p wrong side rows), until piece measures 9cm from cast on edge.  End on a wrong side row, right side facing for shaping.
  • K 2 rows.
  • Change to colour 2.
  • K 2 rows.
  • Stocking stitch 2 rows.
  • Shape crown as follows:
  • (K3, k2tog) across row (32)
  • P
  • (K2, k2tog) across row (24)
  • P
  • (K1, k2tog) across row (16)
  • (P2tog) across row (8)
  • Thread yarn through remaining stitches.  Sew up the back seam and sew in loose ends.
  • Add a pompom to the top of the hat (use a small pompom maker). You could alternatively use a pre-made pompom.

I used a pre-made Rico Design pompom that I had leftover from a previous project.
