One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish…

Here is a very cute and fun free knitting pattern for you.

A blue fish, an easy to knit toy which is so much fun.

It would make an ideal cat toy, or could just be used as a fun display item for your home. It would be a fun addition to a child’s bedroom or nursery.

Of course, your knitted toy fish doesn’t have to be blue, and he doesn’t have to swim in bowl with pompom rocks at the bottom.

However, if he does end up living in a world of pompoms he will certainly be very happy.

Pompoms surely make everyone happy after all.

You can knit this toy fish on any needle size and in any yarn. As long as the needles fit to the yarn, you are good to go.

The blue fish in the photo was knit on 6mm needles with a blue alpaca chunky yarn. This was because I didn’t have any other blue yarn, and also because chunky yarn is fabulous!

Anyway please read on for the easy knitting pattern for a cute little toy fish.

Making up the toy fish

Place both sides of the fish together and sew up, leaving the end of the tail open. Stuff with toy filling. Sew up the tail end and weave in all loose ends.

About the fish eyes

I used some beads to make the fish eyes, and glued them on with a glue gun. If you are going to give the knitted fish toy to a cat or child, you should embroider on some eyes for safety issues. A French knot would work well.

Sewn on buttons would look cute as eyes, and google eyes would be really fun.

It would be better to embroider, sew or glue on eyes before you sew the fish together.

Make pompoms

Of course you don’t have to put your knitted fish in bowl with pompoms. If you do however feel the need, a small sized pompom maker would be a perfect way to create them. You could alternatively make pompoms using the fork method. This video is quite a good tutorial if you would like to see someone making a fork pompom..

Cute ready made pompoms for people who can’t resist wooliness.

One shall not fib. One did buy and not make the pompoms used for Mr Blue Fish. Now, I can make pompoms, quite well actually. However, these Rico Design ones are a little bit irresistible and I may have ordered a pack in every colour. That links takes you to the Amazon Germany page by the way. I don’t know whether or not the pompoms are available outside Europe as Rico is a continental company.

If you can’t get your hands on the Rico pompoms, there are other brands available I’m sure. In any case, pompoms are pretty easy to make.

Thanks so much for reading this post.
