Free Chunky Newborn Beanie Knitting Pattern

Hello there. After the popularity of my simple newborn beanie knitting pattern, there have been requests for a chunky yarn version.

After tinkering around, here it is. This is a free knitting pattern for a newborn baby beanie hat. It is a quick and easy knit in chunky yarn.

This chunky newborn hat is so easy and fast to make. It is knit flat and seamed at the end for easy construction. This knitting method is ideal for knitters who like to knit on two needles. This knitting pattern is perfect for beginner knitters. It is also great for anyone needing to make a baby gift hat in a hurry!

I have made a plain white baby hat and a colourful one done in self striping yarn.

Please read on to get the free knitting pattern and to find out more information about the yarn used to make the chunky hats in the photos.

Materials

  • One pair each of 5mm (USA 8) and 5.5mm (USA 9) knitting needles
  • Approx 30g of chunky yarn per hat
  • Scissors and needle for sewing and finishing

Yarn Information

As you can see, I have made a plain white hat and also a more colourful version in self patterning yarn.

The white hat is made from Stylecraft Special for Babies Chunky and the colourful hat is made from Hayfield Blossom Chunky. I am a massive fan of the Blossom Chunky. It knits up so nicely and quickly and makes such pretty patterns. It is a really soft yarn too, the softest chunky yarn for babies that I have found.

Feel free to use any chunky yarn to make your hat, look for one that works with 6mm knitting needles.

Tension

A 2cm square using 5.5mm knitting needles, stocking stitch and chunky yarn contains approximately 3 stitches 4 and rows.

Knitting pattern

On 5mm needles cast on 40 stitches.

Work 4 rows of garter stitch.

Change to 5.5mm needles.

Starting with a k row, work stocking stitch until the piece measures 10cm from the cast on edge, ending at the completion of a purl row.

Shaping:

  1. *K3, k2tog; repeat from * to the end of the row (32 stitches remain)
  2. P
  3. *K2, k2tog; repeat from * to the end of the row (24 stitches remain)
  4. P
  5. *K1, k2tog; repeat from * to the end of the row (16 stitches remain)
  6. P
  7. * K2tog; repeat from * to the end of the row (8 stitches remain)

Finishing:

  • Cut the yarn, leaving a tail to sew up the back seam.
  • Thread the yarn tail through the stitches that remain. Gather to form the top of the hat.
  • Sew up the back seam.
  • Sew in the loose ends.

And that’s all there is to it – a very fast and easy to knit chunky newborn baby beanie hat.
