I was looking through some photos today. I came across the above shot of a shawl I knit a year or so ago.
This was a one off knit which I made from leftover super chunky yarn. Regular chunky yarn was worked into the pattern too, and I used some bits and pieces of artisan handspun yarn. It was a really quick and easy shawl to knit thanks to a simple garter stitch and super chunky yarn.
The result was a beautifully soft, cosy shawl. It was unique and rather artistic looking. The pictures don’t really do it justice.
This article includes the knitting pattern to make the shawl. Really, it is more of a ‘recipe’. The idea is that you follow the shaping. You can choose whatever yarns you have to hand, either chunky or super chunky. The shawl is knit on 12mm knitting needles, making this a fast knit. It is really to knit, too, and suitable for beginner knitters.

Knitting Pattern for Easy Super Chunky Shawl with Handspun Yarn Elements

If you are new to handspun yarn, this is an excellent knitting pattern to use little bits of it. You only need a little to elevate a simple piece into something really special. Just a stripe here and there will create a unique and truly fabulous accessory.
My favourite place to buy handspun yarn is The Fibre Tree on Etsy.
Abbreviations and Terms

- K2tog – knit 2 together

Unimportant and will vary with differing yarns.
Materials required
- Approx 300g super chunky or chunky yarn leftovers. There are no rules about how much of each yarn colour or type to use. Just knit freely, changing colours when you wish. My shawl uses different types of yarn. It includes pure wool, acrylic super chunky yarn, and regular chunky yarns. Additionally, it has some artisan handspun yarn. I used super chunky, chunky and even a small amount of aran worsted yarn to make my shawl. The differing thicknesses and textures are what gave it the charm and boho look. You can add fashion yarns like eyelash to your shawl knitting project if you like.
- Pair of 12mm knitting needles. That’s size 17 in US terms.
- Scissors
Instructions
The shawl is worked in a triangle from bottom to top. Change yarns whenever you wish, at the beginning and ends of rows. You can leave the join in knots on show if you want. You can also tie on some extra tassels at the end. This garment has an indie, boho look. There are no strict rules, and the ends are not sewn in, unless you wish to do so.

On 12mm needles, cast on 2 stitches.
Row 1: kfb, kfb (4)
Row 2: k
Row 3: *kfb, K to last stitch, kfb
Row 4: k
Repeat rows 3 and 4 until you have 80 stitches on your needle.
Now work ONLY row 3 until you have 140 stitches on your needle.
Cast off loosely in knit.
As already written, add extra tassels to the edges and body of the garment as you wish.
Cast off loosely in knit.
IMPORTANT: THE YARN THAT YOU USE TO CAST OFF WITH WILL GIVE YOU THE FRONT BORDER. For this reason I used a show stopping handspun yarn for the final row and the cast off. You can see the close up below.

And that’s its, a really rather easy to knit super chunky triangle type shawl. It will keep you cosy and allow you to use some of your leftover super chunky and chunky yarns.
