Baby Mittens Free Knitting Pattern

Written by Maz from The Knitting Times

I am making an effort to use up leftover yarn. Like many, if not most, of you lovely readers, my home contains a rather a large collection of not only leftovers but new balls of delicious looking wool that were ‘accidentally’ purchased.

Whilst collecting wool is surely the most fun hobby there is, at some point there is no more space and one has to use it simply in order to be able to buy some more.

Anyway, the free knitting pattern you see here is my first ‘stash buster’ knitting project. A pair of sweet baby mittens, very useful to put away ready to gift. I think baby mittens are a better gift for little ones than hats. Hands need to be kept warm. Mittens are just so useful and its hard to find nicely knit ones available for sale in shops..

If you fancy a nice and easy, quick stash buster knitting project, please read on to get the free knitting pattern for a very cute pair of baby mittens. This article contains an affiliate link.

About the baby mittens

I knit the baby mittens shown in a yarn called Cygnet Baby Colour Soft. This is a dk/8 ply yarn which comes in a variety of beautiful self striping colours. I love self striping yarn as I think it makes knitting more interesting, especially when working on a fairly simple pattern.

I bought the yarn on Ebay – please click here to find some of the stores that sell it.

You can of course use any dk yarn to knit the baby mittens. Indeed, this is an ideal knitting pattern for using up leftovers. This baby mittens knitting pattern only requires a small amount of yarn.

You will need a pair of 4mm knitting needles to make the baby mittens and a needle for sewing up.

I would say that the size of the baby mittens is 0-6m. A little larger than newborn, they will last for several months due to the garter stitch turn up feature.

Lets us get to the free baby mittens knitting pattern.

You will need to know the abbreviations s1, k1, psso to shape the top of the baby mittens. You simply slip one stitch from the left hand needle to the right without working it, then knit 1, then pass the slipped stitched over the knit stitch and drop it. This forms a decrease. The other abbreviations used are just knit and purl.

Ok, let’s knit the baby mittens. Here is the knitting pattern:

Using 4mm needles and dk yarn of your choice cast on 28 stitches.

Knit 24 rows.

Proceed as follows:-

  1. K
  2. P
  3. K
  4. P
  5. K
  6. K

From 1st to 6th row sets pattern.  Work this pattern twice more.

Shape Top

1st Row. (K1, s1, K1, psso, k8, k2tog, k1) twice. 24 stitches remain.

2nd Row: P

3rd Row. (K1, s1, k1, psso, k6, k2tog, k1) twice. 20 stitches remain.

4th Row: P

5th Row. (K1, s1, k1, psso, k4, k2tog, k1) twice. 16 stitches remain.

6th Row. K

Cast off in k.

Join top and side seams and sew in loose ends.

Turn back garter stitch to wear. Place a couple of stitches to secure turn up if wanted.

And that’s it, a lovely pair of baby mittens to gift or even sell. And a superb way to use up odd bits of baby wool.
