Free Knitting Pattern : Fast and Easy Chunky Baby Booties

I recently designed this pair of very cute and incredibly fast to knit baby booties. Being a huge fan of knitting with chunky yarn, I wanted to create some booties that could be whipped up easily whilst watching tv. Chunky yarn is of course very warm and cosy and so these little booties are ideal for winter babies, as well as being an ideal project when you don’t want to concentrate too hard.

The pair shown has been knit from a chunky self striping yarn, Stylecraft Merry Go Round Chunky. They are therefore mismatched even thought they were knit from the same ball of yarn. I think they look really cool, but if you find them a tad too wild you can of course knit the booties in a plain colour too.

Please read on to find out more about this lovely chunky self striping yarn for kids and babies and to get the free easy baby booties knitting pattern.

Materials needed to knit the easy chunky garter stitch baby booties

You will need the following to knit the booties:

  • Approx 30g chunky yarn. I used Stylecraft Merry Go Round Chunky. This yarn is especially created for babies and children. It is easy and quick to knit with, hard wearing and soft. I bought mine here at Love Crafts. You could alternatively use a plain chunky baby yarn such as Stylecraft Special Chunky for Babies.
  • Pair of 6mm knitting needles.
  • Scissors and a needle for sewing up.

EASY CHUNKY BABY BOOTIES FREE KNITTING PATTERN

These chunky baby booties are very easy to knit. There is no picking up of stitches and garter stitch (k) is used throughout the entire piece. You will need to know some basic shaping to knit these booties. The abbreviations are all explained below in the following knitting pattern.

Size of booties

  • 0-3m, although may fit to 6 months depending on baby size. The booties have plenty of stretch.

Tension:

  • 2.5 stitches and 2 rows over 2cm in garter stitch using 6mm needles.

Abbreviations:

  • K – knit
  • P – purl
  • Kfb – knit into the front and back of the stitch, thus increasing by 1
  • Skp – slip one stitch purl wise, knit one stitch, pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch, thus decreasing by 1
  • K2tog – knit 2 stitches together, thus decreasing by 1

Instructions

The booties are knit bottom up.  Make 2.

On 6mm needles and plain yarn cast on 13 stitches.  When you cast on, leave a long enough yarn tail to sew up bottom seam (approx 20cm).

Rows 13 – 20: K

Cast off loosely in K – leave tail long enough to sew up back seam before cutting yarn.

Sew up bottom seam with cast on tail, and back seam with cast off tail.

Sew in loose ends.

If wanted, thread yarn or narrow ribbon though the fabric as shown in the photos of the booties.

And thats it – a fast and easy pair of chunky baby booties.

I hope you enjoyed this free knitting pattern.
