Why the price of Malabrigo yarn may be set to rise in the UK

If you are a fan of Malbrigo yarn, you will know that while a tad expensive, it is the most beautiful, colourful, soft, squishy yarn to work with.

I am a huge personal fan of knitting with Malabrigo, and think it is a luxury yarn well worth its price. I do have a fear that the price may soon be going up in the UK. Please read on to find out why.

Information about Malabrigo yarn

The company Malabrigo began with two brothers-in-law dyeing beautiful yarn by hand in a kettle pot. The quality of the wool and the stunning hand dyed shades soon became a hit in the USA and Europe, and sales have gone from strength to strength.

Malabrigo has a huge range of hand dyed yarns. You can see below the very popular Mecha, Chunky and Rios. Rios is actually my personal favourite Malabrigo yarn. It is aran thickness so goes quite a long way, and knits up far nicer than your average aran yarn. It is silky, smooth, washable and just lovely. The super chunky yarn, Rasta, is another hit from this South American family hand dyeing yarn company. Again, whilst more expensive than your average yarn, once you feel the squishiness in your hands and on your needles or hook you can easily understand why.

Malabrigo originates from Uruguay, and to enable sales in Europe they opened a distribution warehouse in the Czech Republic. The company doesn’t sell their yarn themselves, but via online and physical shop based stockists. Ease of distribution is therefore an essential part of the successful running of the business.

The Czech Republic based warehouse is ideal for supplying yarn throughout Europe, specifically the countries within the European Union. Shipping within the EU really cuts down on costs, from the warehouse the costs are more or less as if sending locally. UK stockists have been able to buy a lovely big box of wholesale yarn from Malabrigo with shipping and customs charges being only around £5.99 – the exact amount depending on weight and value, of course.

Why the cost of Malabrigo yarn may soon be increasing in the UK

As we have just learnt, Malabrigo hand dyed yarn ships wholesale to distributors throughout Europe from a warehouse in the Czech Republic. The shipping costs to the UK have been low due to the country being a member of the EU. This wonderful yarn company have so far kept the pre-Brexit shipping and customs charges as they were before the great parting. This was to allow the many UK stockists to adjust to forthcoming changes. Unfortunately, this period of adjustment is no longer financially viable for Malabrigo and they have just announced a shipping increase of around 6 times the previous the amount. A delivery is now set to cost UK stockists around £38 instead of the £6 that it used to be.

Whilst I am certainly no economic genius, I would have thought that this will surely lead to an increase in the cost of Malabrigo in the UK going forward. However, it could well be that some of the very large stores have found a way around the high shipping and customs costs and will manage to keep their prices the same. I am not sure, I guess we will have to see.

Anyway, I may be wrong, but if you do like Malabrigo and need some, now might the time for a little treat or Christmas present to yourself. I personally buy Malabrigo here at Lovecrafts. If you are new customer, you can get £10 off your first order at Lovecrafts please click here for info.
