Super Fast Bib Free Knitting Pattern

Post by Maz from the Knitting Times

If you are a fan of super fast knitting projects, or are looking for a really quick to knit gift for a new baby, this chunky weight bib may just be what you are looking for.

This free chunky bib knitting pattern is an excerpt from the pattern booklet 20 Quick Knits for Newborns.

The fast knit bib is knit in DMC Natura XL Cotton yarn which I bought here at Lovecrafts. It is available in all sorts of bright and neutral shades and knits up really quickly. Lovely and soft too, as you would expect from cotton. I have also seen this yarn for sale here on Ebay.

If you have some regular cotton dk (8 ply) remnants or balls in your stash, you can use that to knit this easy baby bib too. Simply use two strands held together. This would give a nice looking marled effect to your finished bib, and you could make some lovely colour combinations too. My favourite cotton yarn for babies is Sirdar Snuggly. Cotton is in general soft though, and any will work just fine.

You can use a regular yarn to knit this baby bib, of course. However, cotton is absorbent, easy to care for and I think the best fibre for knitting baby bibs.

You will need a button to fasten the baby bib. For a handmade with love button, I would recommend Etsy. Any button will work, 2.5cm diameter will be a nice secure fit.

Ok here is the knitting pattern.

3 stitches and 6 rows over 2cm in garter stitch

Abbreviations:

Yrn – yarn around needle – place yarn at front of work as if to purl where the next stitch is knit.  This will form an increase, or hole in the case of making a buttonhole.

Instructions

On 6mm needles cast on 3 stitches.

K 2 rows.

Next row (button hole): k1, yo, k2tog.

Now k every row until piece measures 22cm from the cast on edge.

Cast on 21 stitches (24 are now on needle).

K 12 rows.

Now work the following two rows:

  1. K2tog, k to last 2 stitches, k2tog
  2. K

Repeat these two rows until you have 4 stitches left on your needle.

K2tog twice.

Cast off and secure final stitch.

Sew in ends.

Attach a button to fasten the bib as shown in photo.

Idea:  Working a border of single crochet looks fantastic to finish off a knitted bib.  You could alternatively embroider a blanket stitch border.  A tassel at the bottom point of a bandana bib is another cute addition to your finished piece!

And that’s it, a really quick to knit baby bib in chunky cotton.

Thank you for joining us today and happy knitting!
