Today I have a cute little free knitting pattern for you, a lovely textured beanie hat for a new baby. Newborn size, this cute hat will fit baby for the first few months.
I recently published a knitting pattern leaflet with 6 designs of patterned and textured newborn beanie hats. You can see in the photo below how using a variety of texture knitting stitches creates wonderful little hats.

The free knitting pattern here is the pink hat shown in the photo above.
This particular hat is made with a knitting stitch called the Andalusian Rib. It is a really easy knitting stitch, basically stocking stitch with one row of 1 x 1 rib thrown in. Who knew that just one row of differential knitting would make such a difference to an overall piece?
Read on to find out how to knit the Andalusian Rib knitting stitch and to get the free newborn beanie hat knitting pattern.
Cute textured newborn beanie hat knitting pattern
As stated above, this hat is made using the Andalusian rib knitting stitch. This easy stitch is made of 4 rows, the 3rd row being 1 x 1 rib. The stitch is worked over an even number of stitches, thus:
- Row 1: k
- Row 2: p
- Row 3: (k1, p1) across row
- Row 4: p
The baby hat uses this stitch in the main part of the hat and the brim is a simple garter stitch.

Here is the knitting pattern:
Materials Needed
- A pair each of 3.5mm and 4mm knitting needles.
- Approx 25g of DK yarn. I used Yarnsmiths Merino DK.
- Scissors and a needle for sewing up.
Pattern
On 3.5mm needles, cast on 60 stitches.
K (garter stitch) 8 rows.
Change to 4mm needles.
Work the following 4 rows:
Row 1: Knit.
Row 2: Purl.
Row 3: * K1, p1; repeat from * to the end of the row.
Row 4 Purl.
Repeat these 4 rows 6 times more.
Now shape the top of the hat as follows:
- *k3, k2tog; repeat from * to end of row (48)
- P
- *k2, k2tog; repeat from * to end of row (36)
- P
- *k1, k2tog; repeat from * to end of row (24)
- P
- *k2tog; repeat from * to end of row (12)
Cut yarn, leaving a long enough piece to sew up back seam.
Thread yarn through the remaining stitches, pull to gather top of hat and sew up the back seam.
Weave in all loose yarn ends.
I hope you enjoyed this free newborn hat knitting pattern. You can find more like this in my new knitting pattern leaflet on Amazon, many thanks.
